A capoeira photo shoot with Theo McInnes
A day with Theo McInnes was a spontaneous photoshoot day. I promised to get a little gang together and although I had confirmed with the man himself, who had booked a studio, arranged a team and at his end had everything in place. My end was just not sure, I had an idea what he was aiming to catch and invited the people I thought would be suitable. Two confirmed and I just knew that we needed two more, I confirmed and prayed that the other two would make it - I took a risk and it payed off.

Domingo Pau - Clave
Domingo Pau when teaching a workshop or class often teaches his clapping clave. It's part of his method and ideology that dance students should have at least a little knowledge of music and contra tempo. It does involve first being able to say it and then say it and clap it, finally just clapping making some parts silence. I have seen that it also gives students a reason to teach each other and...

Although this is really a Capoeira channel this dance is a dance from Cuba. It isn't documented but to me, this is one cousin of Capoeira. Created by the dockworkers during the time spent waiting for the ships & tides using impromptu clave and boxes made into drums we see a very important element preserved where the drum follows the dancer. Here you can also see where Micheal Jackson got some o...

Basic technique for playing Berimbau in Capoeira
Great
beautiful!
Nice! ❤
Good to see that you're continuing this good work with kids
Thank you for sharing your knowledge ! How can one hold the caxixi for it not to overpower the sound of the berimbau? I am still working on cleaning my notes but I find it hard to handle the caxixi. I know we are eventually supposed to be able to control it enough and add more rythm while playing.
Good question. What we should be considering is that we aren't playing only the berimbau but also the cixixi. If we hold the caxixi more horizontal and make sure we are using the alna and radius rotation and not the wrist it will help a lot. The two sounds of buzz on the wire and cixixi should be blended. I will make a little video about it. Thanks for comment
@@youarecapoeira muito obrigada pela sua resposta Mestre . I will try holding the caxixi that way.
sick
?
In a good way!!! Really inspiring video, appreciate the insight
I believe this was the last day - everyone had been practicing
What an incredible game!
nice!
BaZiNgA!
Obrigado
Great job!! Thanks!!
Guessing you play the berimbau? In Capoeira it's such an important instrument and I strongly believe that before it was cared for more!
@@youarecapoeira I just got one about a week ago. I can't say I play it! That will be some weeks/months in the future. I've been playing drumset for 50+ years. The berimbau demands respect. I'm learning to string, tune, and hold it. I do that 2 or 3 times a day.
@@leor.labarge8625 It defiantly teaches patients even before getting to play it. Your doing the right thing and how to hold and hit it are a little difficult. The baqueta hand is the important one - carful not to use the wrist but rather the fingers and for arm. If you have independence from drumming the rhythms are easy once you get that striking action. Good luck - if you need any help message me,
@@youarecapoeira Thanks for your support! Much appreciated!!
@@youarecapoeira Thanks to you and a few other guiding voices ( some in Portugese!) I'm getting there! Long way to go! ua-cam.com/users/shortsSxxPRCXbneU?feature=share
Thanks for all the help!! Your video is very clear, well shot and really helpful!
I need to continue and do a few more. I have seen some very tense and limited berimbau playing recently. The enthusiasm needs to be combined with good technique - teachers responsibility!
@@youarecapoeira You've been really helpful. I made a video of my playing. Would it be an impositon if I asked you to look at it?
@@leor.labarge8625 Well that's nice to know. I'm happy to help if I can and I'm learning too . Which video send me it please.
@@youarecapoeira Thanks !! Here's the video. ua-cam.com/video/FAtPsWh2D9I/v-deo.html
Salve Fantasma!
Bahia. Falamos. Axe
nice job 👍
Hi mestre fantasma, I am a great fan of capoeira skills sharing through videos. Thanks for the negativa tutorial. Capoeira is a great exercise working body, mind and soul. As an angoleiro I prefer the way mestre João grande does the negativa in a more protective manner on the knees. Mine were injured couple years ago. Best!
Thanks fro your comment - I like a few different ways to do the negative and here is only one - but I understand not everyone has good knees. Here they say "Use it or lose it". I enjoyed too learning with João Grande Axe
Mestre Gerardo has such a great voice and presence Ache hermano
This is so good, obrigado mestre 🙏🏼
Playing Ponciano has always been so much pleasure
I trained under Ray Coates Sensei when at University in the early 2000's. Good times which have stayed with me and I was sad to hear of his passing a few years back.
I was luck to be invited to help a bit at that Uni with him mid eighties tho. I would have loved to have a chat with him after he retired
Positioning...
Talvez no futuro tambem 😜🔥🤟

was great to join your live session, now I will try this thank you
Most of these videos are to help learn the basics well. Sometimes we don't have the time needed in each class to divide the class into different levels. Also, everyone is at a different level! Good luck and if you need assistance message me
Isso sim é capoeira de Angola
great work Simon
Thanks, Casquinha for the support Hope you're well. Here is not the same and maybe never will be the London you knew again!
You always break stuff down so beautifully, really enjoyed training along to the video. Thankyou. Azeitona.
Happy new year. thank you so much. I'll be doing more

@@youarecapoeira opa tudo tranquilo?
beautiful game!
Glad you think so. These two have are a great example of UR Capoeira method and philosophy of training and playing.
will share this one with everyone I know! The basics get glossed over in the pursuit of playing rhythms, really grateful that you keep it real and so generously share the basics with us on a public forum. Axe Mestre.
Thank you. Seems to me that when we get these few basics down - apart from learning to practice daily - we get to advance in the rhythms much quicker... Hare and the tortoise
sim
Sim e muito bonito a balanca do roda tambem
Hey Simon. Thanks, this is brilliant.. I've been practising this but the high knee but realise there's crucial detail I've been missing. Hope you're good. (Scottish)
OK thanks to let me know. What were you missing? I'll do a follow up to this shortly so keep practicing
Did I teach you in Weavers field park?
This is the rhythm that unlocked everything for me. Nice one mestre
That's good to know - it's got something special for sure when you feel it
Thank you Mestre, I have been practicing this rhythm recently so this video is a big help.
Never rush take it easy get the swing slowly then build it. Thanks for commenting
Also seems that many play it with the buzz note different without that swing or space - there is only one double buzz
Nice!
Thats was soooooo good to watch. Thanks for sharing with us.
so good. so so good.
